Back-to-School Posture Checklist for Parents

As children head back to school this September, it’s important to think beyond uniforms and school supplies. From heavy backpacks to long hours at desks, small changes can have a big impact on your child’s posture and overall well-being. Here are some things we would recommend looking at:

Choosing the Right Backpack

Heavy or improperly worn backpacks can cause unnecessary strain on a child’s developing muscles and joints. To support spinal health, a backpack should ideally weigh no more than 10-15% of a child’s body weight.

Choose a backpack with padded shoulder straps and a padded back panel and encourage your child to wear both straps to distribute weight evenly. Regularly check the contents, keeping heavier items closest to the back and removing unnecessary equipment to help reduce strain on the back and shoulders. By making these simple adjustments, you can help support better posture and comfort throughout the school year.

Check Their Posture

Checking your child’s posture is an important part of supporting their overall health and wellbeing. Children spend many hours sitting at desks, completing homework, and using electronic devices, all of which can encourage poor posture habits. Common signs of poor posture include rounded shoulders, a forward head position, and uneven shoulder height.

Parents can help by creating an ergonomic homework space with an appropriately sized chair, desk, and screen. Encourage your child to sit with both feet flat on the floor, use supportive cushions or a footrest if needed, and encourage regular movement breaks throughout the day. These simple habits can help promote better posture and comfort during the school year.

Ease Back into Physical Activity

After a summer of different routines, children may need time to rebuild their fitness levels and adjust to a more structured schedule. Encouraging regular physical activity can help improve overall wellbeing while supporting healthy muscles and joints. Simple ways to keep children active include walking or cycling to school where possible, gradually returning to sports and extracurricular activities, and incorporating stretching and warm-up exercises into their routine.

Watch for signs of discomfort

Children do not always tell their parents when something is bothering them, so it’s important to be aware of signs that may indicate discomfort. Complaints of back, neck, or shoulder pain, frequent headaches, poor posture, or a reluctance to take part in physical activities should not be ignored.

While these signs may not always indicate a serious issue, they can suggest that your child is experiencing physical discomfort and may benefit from a professional assessment.

Schedule a Chiropractic Assessment with Lichfield Chiropractic Clinic

A chiropractic assessment can help identify potential concerns before they become bigger problems. Assessments typically look at posture, movement, and spinal health to ensure your child’s body is functioning well.
